Carpal tunnel is a passage in the wrist formed by a semicircle of carpal bones connected with a tough membrane called the transverse carpal ligament that holds the bones together. Nerves, tendons, blood and other soft tissues run through this passage tunnel. The median nerve is the major nerve of the hand. This nerve enters the hand through the gap formed by the carpal bones and transverse ligament. The median nerve supplies sensation to the thumb-side of the palm, and to the thumb, index finger, middle finger, and the thumb-side of the ring finger. It also supplies movement to part of the hand. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is caused by pressure exerted on the median nerve at the wrist. The passageway or tunnel in which the nerves, tendons, blood and soft tissue run through is rigid, with a defined space that is unable to enlarge. Swelling of any of the tissues in this area can cause compression of the median nerve and obstruction of blood flow that retards healing and causes further cell degeneration. When this happens, carpal tunnel symptoms begin to present themselves. Class CTS symptoms are tingling and numbness in the thumb, index and middle finger, aching in the forearm which can radiate to the shoulder and clumsiness or weak grip. CTS is most commonly found in people who perform excessive repetitive tasks, such as data entry typists, carpenters, laboratory technicians etc. Some other reasons for this swelling are from injury, friction, fractures, fluid retention, forceful movements and infection. Women between the ages of 40 to 60 appear to be prime candidates for developing CTS. CTS has also been linked with women who are pregnant or taking birth control pills andhas also been reported in patients on kidney dialysis. Deficiency of certain essential nutrients is believed to be responsible for CTS.

Magnesium is needed for the efficient production of enzymes. It is also involved in protein metabolism, utilization of fats and carbohydrates and is necessary for proper nerve function.
Both genders need magnesium to keep their bones strong. If you take calcium be sure to take it in a two to one ratio with magnesium.
The heart needs to pulsate at a steady rhythm for peak efficiency Magnesium helps keep the heart at a regular beat and thereby avoid irregular heart beats (arrhythmias).
A deficiency in magnesium may help explain the fatigue that runs rampant in modern life. Cells store energy by creating adenosine triphosphate (ATP) a process that requires magnesium.
Foods rich in magnesium include almonds, lima beans, peanuts, spinach and tofu.
